Endangered Koala Bears
Koala bears are not close to becoming extinct, but there are some concerns over the current numbers
of koala bears worldwide. Different studies have come up with widely varying estimates of wild koala bear
populations.
The Australian government estimates put the wild koala bear population in the hundreds of
thousands, while another study says that the number could be as low as 80,000.
The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) says there could be as few as 43,000 koala bears left in the wild. The U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service has declared koala bears to be threatened.
Overall, koala bears are not about to disappear, but many people have concerns over the future of
koala bears, especially with the deforestation going on in parts of Australia.
